Wimborne Cup

36-hole amateur scratch medal played on one day. Played on the last Saturday of June.
Presented by the 1st Lord Wimborne in 1911

The 1st Lord Wimborne was the local landowner. He founded Broadstone Golf Club (then Dorset G.C.) in 1898 and, this being a success, went on to form a syndicate to develop land in the Luscombe Valley to construct Parkstone Golf Course. In conjunction with the land he acquired the Reservoir and Pumphouses from the Poole Water Company which had closed down in 1906. Willie Park Junior designed the course, work began in 1909 and play in 1910.

On the Cup is engraved “presented again to Parkstone Golf Club in grateful memory of many happy days on the course”. N.G.Holt from Meyrick Park won the Cup in 1928, ‘29, and ‘30 and in doing so in 3 consecutive years had won the Cup outright, but he then re-presented it to perpetuate competition for the Trophy.

Stanley H. Vine, a Bournemouth taxi driver from Meyrick Park and Queens Park then won the Wimborne Cup in six consecutive years from 1931-36. He was said to be a superb putter. Ken Longmore then won the Trophy 7 times from 1938 to 1964 (not played  between 1939-45, during World War II).

F.E Guest was Lord Wimborne's third son and was the Club's first Captain in 1911.

Bill Shankland Memorial Trophy

36-hole amateur scratch competition played over two days, open to male golfers aged 55 or over.
Usually played in the first week of May on a Thursday and Friday.

Bill Shankland was a member from 1973 until he died in 1998. He represented Australia at Rugby Union in 1926, Rugby League in 1928 and at swimming and boxing. He was 3rd equal, along with Reg Whitcombe in the Open Championship at St Andrews in 1939 and 3rd at Hoylake in 1947.

In 1998 Richard Jowett, Vice-Captain at that time asked Bill if he had any trophies from his professional career which might be awarded for annual competition at Parkstone. Bill was not one to hoard his memorabilia but he was able to unearth a glass decanter which was one of two given to him by The Dunlop Company, presumably his sponsors in his 65th year (born 25th July 1907, died 8th September 1998). On the stopper rim is engraved: “To Bill from Dunlop Friends 1.10.72”

After discussion with previous Captains, Dr Donald Holmes (a past Captain & President of Parkstone) suggested a format change which still remains and continues to attract high class golfers from all parts of the country. Every year one of Bill's sons (Bill Jnr.) attends to present the prizes, and gives glass tumblers, engraved with a portrait of Bill to winners.

Bill Shankland was a sporting legend, he managed to play a number of different sports to a very high standard but Rugby League and Golf are the ones he is most remembered for. More information can be found on his wikipedia page.
